This Sunday I will be away in West Bend, Wisconsin, doing a breathwork facilitation training. I have been passionate about breathwork since my counsellor training program in 2003. I was genuinely awed at how a simple breath technique had the power to unlock and release the subconscious baggage I had been schlepping around as a generalized mood (depression, resistance, sadness).
I was able to release tremendous amounts of emotional ‘content’ without having a single solitary thought in my mind as it was happening. This was a true revelation for me as I had only ever experienced emotions as the result of thoughts; I had certainly never experienced emotions in the absence of thoughts. This somatic experience set my course for personal healing and subsequent professional development focusing on conscious movement.
I have been consistently drawn to practices that “‘dethrone the ego-mind as the sole arbiter of reality” because it clearly is not. The mind tells us what we thinkwe feel and what we thinkwe know whereas the body tells us what we actually feel and what we actually know.
Dance Divine has been an unfacilitated event because I want more than anything for people to listen to themselves; to their inner knowing, their senses, their intuition, their feelings. These things offer you true, customized guidance.
In the near future, I will be pairing breath and movement and offering this through workshops and in my private practice.I certainly remain an advocate of talk therapy, yet there are times when things simply need to be felt and released. The mind is not very good at that; if fact it is generally the primary obstacle to that. Those of us who practice getting out of our heads using conscious dance know just how hard that can be at times!
